Tame Impala - Feels Like We Only Go Backwards

Tame Impala is an Australian rock band with two full length studio albums.  Lonerism (2012) is their second album and contains a couple of outstanding songs.  I like sound of Feels Like We Only Go Backwards - it's unique and catchy.  And any group that features a kazoo has to be cool, right?

Wikipedia says that "their name refers to the impala, a medium sized antelope."  I like to think that they are named after an old Chevy Impala that's been tamed by its driver...that would be way cooler.

The Joy Formidable - Cholla

The Joy Formidable is a Welsh group despite the name that formed in 2007.  This Ladder is Ours is from their second full length studio album titled Wolf's Law (2013).  It's a great album that was just released in January in the US.

Cholla is a cactus.  While I've never heard anyone described as a spiny cactus before, I think the song works well in driving the metaphor home with siphoned smiles and dagger-turned hands.  It is my favorite song on the album - a hard decision when surrounded by so many excellent tunes on this album!!

Villagers - Nothing Arrived

A very cool folk group from Ireland with a great sound.  I like a lot of the songs on their second album, Awayland (2013) and I hope that their international exposure grows as deserved!

Nothing Arrived is such a clever song and I've listened to it many times.  Sometimes expecting nothing leaves you unsurprised but it seems like a sad way to manage expectations.

Bombay Bicycle Club - How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep

Bombay Bicycle Club is an English band with three albums to it's credit. A Different Kind of Fix (2011) was their last one to date.  According to Wikipedia, the name was derived from "a chain of Indian restaurants in Britain."  I wonder why they stuck with a restaurant name instead of a favorite dish?  I think it would have been ever cooler if the name was Masala Dosa or Palak Paneer!

In any case, please see the video below for music and lyrics.

Rihanna - Nobody's Business (Feat. Chris Brown)

I hate when this album cover pops up on my iPhone.  It looks like I was surfing on a questionable site!  In any case, I do like the song.  I do agree that Rihanna has every right to be with whomever she wants (it really is nobody's business besides Chris Brown, Rihanna and the police).  Though one can question her judgment, she certainly has a right to make decisions that appear wrong-headed to others.

Please see the video below that contains music and lyrics.

Tevin Campbell - Can We Talk?

An old song from 1993 that came into my head one day.  Not sure what happened to the promising career that seemed ahead of him at the time.

In any case, please see the video below for music and lyrics.

Tinie Tempah - Let Go (feat. Emeli Sande)

Great vocal combination of Tinie Tempah and Emeli Sandé!  I always love Tinie Tempah's lyrical phrasings -  case in point: feeling tired like I'm Michelin...I get this strange picture in my head of the Michelin man asleep in a hammock!

The song is from his first album titled Disc-Overy (2010).He's been working on a follow-up album for quite a while.  Though it was supposed to come out last year, it's been delayed and is reportedly slated for an early 2013 release.  Though how early in 2013 can it be, when we're already in March?

Snow Patrol - Set the Fire to the Third Bar

I love Snow Patrol.  Though the group has been around for almost twenty years, I will admit that I am late to the party when it comes to this group.  I had not heard of them until Eyes Open (2006) came out and Chasing Cars was released as a single.  What a great song!!

Set the Fire to the Third Bar is a lovely song as well from the same album with the incomparable Martha Wainwright providing support on female vocals .  It took me a long time to figure out what this song meant.  I literally thought that they were going to set the third bar that they visited that night on fire (though that's not supported in any way by the lyrics).  Thank heavens for Wikipedia which provides some insight:
It was written especially with Martha in mind.  Lightbody wrote the song in only 20 minutes and described it as the quickest he had ever written a song. The song title describes an electric heater. While writing in the freezing cold and wearing [finger less] gloves, Lightbody recalled that as a child his Aunt Jean had an electric heater, and "if we were very good and it was very cold, she'd let us put all three bars on" and he goes on to say how it represents "a beacon of warmth within a song about distance".
That makes much more sense than a song about arsonists!

Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man

I like this song by Bruno Mars a lot. It's one of my favorites from his second album, Unorthodox Jukebox (2012).  The great thing about his music is the diversity.  There is something for everyone in the album and nearly every song is lyrically outstanding.

Please see the video below for music and lyrics.

Jann Arden - A Million Miles Away

You've probably heard Jann Arden's biggest hit, Insensitive.  It's one of my favorite 90's songs.  She is a Canadian artist with eleven albums to her credit, but I'm sadly not familiar with most of them.  A Million Miles Away is from her tenth one, Free (2009).  I like it a lot.
